SPC2008 Keynote – Bill Gates
Online Services
Online services is a key announcement during the Keynote. Providing Exchange and SharePoint to the people as an online service.
To see for yourself have a look at http://www.microsoft.com/online – this sort of makes the Google sites offering look at little simple http://sites.google.com/ part of the Team Edition http://www.google.com/apps/business/index.html – Bill Gates stated that Google don’t have the business understanding saying “The day they announce them is their best day!”
Microsoft are looking to provide services to everyone with Live coming up from the small customer and online services will move down from the 5000 user company.
Search
Search was discussed with the public announcement if Search Server 2008 and FAST. Although not yet a done deal the FAST search looked very good and provides so new ideas on how to interact with search. I have blogged in detail on MSS 2008.
SharePoint v.Next
There was some talk about O14, discussed the list schematic being in the database – bringing SharePoint technology into the core SQL Platform, there was also notes on bring AD information back into SQL for replication.
SQL Server 2008 (Q3 release) will pickup the features from SharePoint allowing native tables to be created in the underlying database. There is also hints at the use of the FileType (as I blogged here) and we could read into the information released that this will happen!
